Why? Because Writers Write

Apr 18, 2021 | Noveling Life

After years of resisting, I’ve started a blog. I’ve been working in the world of books for ten years (apart from a brief stint in disaster response and preparedness, which has more in common with writing and publishing than you might think). I started in a local bookstore and am currently working in the typesetting and book design department at a publishing house.

I refused to start a blog for numerous completely valid reasons. Here are a few of them:

  1.  I didn’t want to.
  2. Everyone else was doing it.
  3. Its scary.
  4. Why?

I didn’t want to. Starting a blog, I knew, was going to be a lot of work. I was too busy doing things like making money, hanging out with friends, traveling, reading, and having a life (sort-of). If I was going to start the dang blog, I needed to be completely 100% committed. And I wasn’t for a long time. Embarking on a writing project of any kind will get you nowhere fast if you don’t actually want to do it.

Everyone else was doing it. Okay, not everyone, but it sure seemed like it. As of April 2021 there are at least 600 million blogs on the internet. Do we really need one more? This is the question that kills creativity. If everyone answered no to that question, a question we all ask ourselves, then creation, progress and learning stops. So I decided to change my No to a Yes.

Its scary. Yes, yes it is. I finally asked myself: so what? Get over it.

Why? Because a writer writes. I am starting this blog to write, and to encourage others to write. That’s the fundamental and most important reason. If I encourage one person to pick up their pen, or answer one person’s question, or make one person laugh enough to get over their fear of getting started, then that’s enough.

What is noveling? Urban Dictionary defines noveling as “a long, overly wordy text message or social network update” which I think is hilarious. I may be guilty of sending an overly-wordy text message or two. But I am using it in its other sense: the act of writing a novel. Such a simple word for doing something so daunting, exhilarating, confusing, agonizing, and fulfilling.

What is this Blog About?

  • Joys and stresses of living a noveling life
  • Quirky book history
  • Navigating the good and bad writing advice, books, and resources
  • Little, unimportant things like grammar, plot, dialogue, character, etc.
  • The whys and hows of the English language
  • Scary things like publishing
  • Book design

I will focus on the journey of writing novels, from the first spark of an idea to navigating the world of publishing. I will be posting reviews of writing books and resources, and exploring the nitty gritty of writing a novel. I’ll also delve into the history of books and language, because I am a nerd.

So why did I start a blog? Because I am a writer, and writers write.
